In a significant shift among Europe’s major airports, Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport to become the continent’s busiest hub, as evidenced by the latest passenger traffic figures for July. Istanbul Airport reported handling 8.15 million passengers during the month, surpassing Heathrow’s count of 7.86 million. This change comes as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decrease in passenger numbers from the previous year, while Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase.
The drop in Heathrow’s numbers is partly attributed to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This development has reignited discussions regarding the need for expanded capacity at Heathrow, emphasizing the urgency for the UK government to approve the airport’s proposed third runway. Currently operating with two runways that are nearing full capacity, Heathrow’s proposed £33 billion expansion is projected to boost its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, which the airport argues is crucial for enhancing the UK’s international connectivity, trade, and tourism.
Since its opening in 2018, Istanbul Airport has rapidly established itself as a key player in international aviation, benefiting from its expansive site and 24-hour operations. It currently boasts three runways, with plans for a fourth runway anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026. These factors have contributed to its ability to accommodate a growing number of travelers, reinforcing its position as a major aviation hub.
Amid these developments, other UK airports have also reported notable achievements. Both London Stansted and Manchester airports experienced their busiest July on record, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively. These figures highlight the robust demand for air travel within the UK, despite the challenges faced by Heathrow.
