In a significant diplomatic engagement, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in London. The agenda for the discussions encompasses critical issues such as irregular migration, relations between Europe and the UK, the situation in Ukraine, and the conflict in Iran. A key point of focus will be the efforts to curb small boat crossings over the English Channel, a persistent challenge for both nations.
To address the migration issue, the UK and France are prepared to bolster resources for French law enforcement agencies tasked with preventing the launch of migrant boats from French shores and dismantling smuggling networks. The number of French officers dedicated to this mission is anticipated to increase to nearly 1,050. The enhanced teams are set to include experts in seizing equipment and apprehending smugglers, as well as additional intelligence and coastal units.
Interestingly, the incidence of small boat crossings has dropped to its lowest in seven years. Migration experts suggest this decline is influenced by various factors, including improved security conditions in Syria, which may have reduced the urgency for some migrants to attempt the perilous crossing.
Beyond migration, Burnham aims to seek Macron’s backing for fostering closer UK-European Union relations. The UK is keen on renegotiating certain arrangements with the EU to enhance trade, with a particular interest in sectors like electricity and agricultural products. These talks may also explore the possibility of a youth mobility scheme and arrangements that would allow European students to attend British universities at domestic fee rates. However, Burnham is expected to be cautious regarding the number of young people the UK would accommodate under such a scheme.
