British tennis player Sonay Kartal has reached a career milestone by advancing to the final of the Wuhan Open, a significant achievement given her recent return from a six-month hiatus due to a back injury. The 24-year-old secured her spot in the final after defeating Jelena Ostapenko in a closely contested match, winning 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) on Saturday.

Kartal’s victory is particularly remarkable as she trailed in both sets and faced six set points before prevailing in two tiebreaks. This performance underscores her mental resilience, a quality she highlighted when describing the match as one of her toughest.

Entering the tournament ranked world No. 170, Kartal has become the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format’s inception in 2009. Her impressive run at Wuhan ensures she will break into the world’s top 50 in the next rankings update, surpassing Katie Boulter to become Britain’s new women’s singles No. 1.

Kartal’s journey in the tournament has seen her overcome several established players, including Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, and Elina Svitolina. Her recent performances mark a significant comeback, hinting at a resurgence reminiscent of her 2025 Wimbledon run, where she reached the fourth round before being sidelined by injury.

In the other semi-final, Poland’s Maja Chwalińska defeated her compatriot Iga Świątek with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-1. Świątek struggled with a left-thigh injury during the match, requiring a medical timeout and continuing with her leg bandaged.
