NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has expressed expectations that the United Kingdom will persist in enhancing its defence spending and uphold its commitment to NATO’s long-term military objectives. Although he does not foresee the UK immediately reaching the proposed defence spending target of 3.5% of GDP by 2035, Rutte remains optimistic about future leadership maintaining progress towards this goal.
Rutte highlighted that increased investment in defence could bolster national security and simultaneously drive economic growth. He pointed to the potential for job creation and industrial growth in sectors related to military projects as benefits of the planned defence investment programme, which is anticipated to involve several hundred billion pounds in long-term expenditure.
In the UK, the issue of defence funding has sparked political debate, with some voicing concerns over whether current plans are sufficient to meet NATO commitments promptly. In response, UK officials are actively developing a long-term strategy focused on expanding military capabilities and modernizing defence systems to address these concerns.
Moreover, Rutte commended the UK’s steadfast support for Ukraine, noting Britain’s significant role in rallying international support for Kyiv. He emphasized the necessity for NATO allies to continue intensifying their defence efforts in the face of escalating security challenges.
