Ukraine is actively pursuing new agreements with the United States for the supply of long-range weapons, aiming to bolster its military capabilities significantly. The initiative follows high-level discussions between the Ukrainian leader and US President Donald Trump, signaling a new phase of military cooperation between the two nations.
Speaking to reporters in Kyiv, Zelensky underscored the strategic importance of acquiring these advanced systems. Currently, Ukraine relies heavily on its domestically produced long-range drones to strike military and energy infrastructure deep within Russian territory. The acquisition of sophisticated American long-range missiles would provide Kyiv with more powerful and precise tools to shape the battlefield, reducing its reliance on drone capabilities for such critical missions.
To move these plans forward, a Ukrainian delegation is scheduled to travel to the United States for technical meetings at the end of September or in early October. These discussions will focus on the practical details and implementation of the weapons purchase agreement. The groundwork for this was laid during a meeting between Zelensky and Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where the broad outlines of the new cooperation were agreed upon.
In a notable development, the cooperation is not one-sided. Zelensky revealed that technical teams from both countries would also begin work on the potential purchase of Ukrainian-made drones by the United States. This reflects growing international recognition of Ukraine’s innovative and battle-tested drone technology. Kyiv is also preparing to share its expertise in countering drone swarms, a tactic heavily used by Russia, with partner nations.
Further strengthening its defensive posture, Zelensky announced that Ukraine had received a US-made Patriot air defense system from Israel a month ago. The country anticipates the delivery of two more such systems in the fall, which will be crucial in defending against aerial threats. These developments come amid rising regional tensions, with Zelensky citing a recent incident where 19 of 92 Russian drones allegedly breached Polish airspace.
