French President Emmanuel Macron is set to embark on a two-day state visit to Spain from September 29 to 30, as confirmed by the Spanish government. During his visit, Macron will engage in discussions with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and attend a state banquet hosted by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
This visit marks Macron’s first official trip to Spain since January 2023 and the first state visit by a French president to Spain since 2009. The agenda for the meeting between Macron and Sanchez is expected to focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation and tackling pressing European challenges, such as the protection of democracy, the implications of social media, and the advancement of artificial intelligence.
In addition to regional issues, the leaders will address significant international matters, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and developments in the Middle East. Their discussions aim to foster a unified approach to these complex global issues.
Earlier in 2023, Macron and Sanchez signed a friendship treaty, symbolizing a commitment to strengthening ties between France and Spain. However, the treaty has yet to receive ratification in Spain due to opposition from right-wing political factions.
