Instagram Unlocks Multitasking: Reels Get YouTube-Style Floating Player

by admin477351

Instagram is taking a significant step towards enhancing user convenience by testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels. This new feature, long enjoyed by users of platforms like YouTube, allows a video to continue playing in a small, floating window even after the user navigates away from the main app feed or switches to another application entirely. This development aims to make the video consumption experience on the platform more fluid and uninterrupted.

The functionality is designed to be intuitive. While watching a Reel, users can simply switch apps or browse their device, and the video will automatically shrink into a movable overlay. This is particularly beneficial for longer Reels, as it allows viewers to stay engaged with content while simultaneously replying to messages, browsing the web, or checking emails. A select group of users is currently part of the initial testing phase, receiving in-app notifications explaining the new capability.

For content creators, this update could be a game-changer. By reducing the friction of staying within the app, PiP mode is expected to increase total watch time and lower the rate at which viewers abandon videos midway. This could lead to more consistent engagement metrics. Control remains in the user’s hands, as the feature can be easily disabled through the three-dot menu on any Reel by toggling off the “Picture in Picture” option.

This move comes as part of a broader push by Instagram to refine its user experience, which also includes the recent launch of a dedicated iPad app. The new tablet application is optimized for larger screens, featuring refreshed layouts and a dedicated “Following” tab, designed to provide a more immersive and user-friendly interface for browsing and watching content.
